Govardhan, 2018.05.12 (VT): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has summonsed The Braj Foundation to appear at a hearing on 16th May. On Thursday, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Govardhan, Sarvagyaram Mishra, delivered the summons to appear before the tribunal.
The summons notice requires The Braj Foundation to provide information on two issues. Firstly, the tribunal requires information about whether The Braj Foundation acquired permissions from any Government Department before constructing the gate at Sankarshan kund. Secondly, The Braj Foundation has been asked to provide information about the sources of the funding for the kund development and whether Government funds were used to develop the kund.
The Braj Foundation installed a huge deity at Sankarshan kund at the end of last year after restoring the kund. The Braj Foundation also put a boundary wall around the kund and has instructed staff to close the gate in the evening.
Hundreds of thousands of devotees do Govardhan parikrama during the night hours, especially in the summer months and during purmina (full moon). There are often so many devotees on the parikrama at night that it becomes difficult for people to find a place to sit and rest. For this reason, devotees of Shri Govardhan are requesting that the kund be kept open at night.
The Braj Foundation restored and developed the kund but the organization does not own the land. The NGT has ordered the Braj Foundation to register all restoration or development activities.
