Govardhan: 2018.05.16 (VT): During the auspicious period of Puruhottam Maas (May 16th to June 13th), police have implemented traffic restrictions due to the heavy traffic and the huge increase in the number of people doing Govardhan parikrama. A one way traffic system has been organized in Govardhan and heavy vehicles are being redirected to the Govardhan bypass.
Police are heavily enforcing the restrictions and are warning that drivers who attempt to avoid the diversion to Govardhan bypass and those who disregard the one-way system will be fined Rs2000.
Huge crowds arrived in Govardhan on the evening of 15th May and huge numbers of pilgrims are expected throughout the month. The first day of Purushottam Maas is considered to be particularly auspicious, so, many were eager to arrive in Braj in time this occasion. Those who cannot dedicate every day of this month to religious practice, reserve the first and last day of Purushottam Maas for fasting and parikrama.
Temples throughout Braj have arranged special programs and millions of devotees are eager to enter Braj during this month as it is a particularly auspicious time for becoming absorbed in Bhakti.
There are several parikrama routes in Braj, but, the most popular is Govardhan parikrama. At this time of year, it is too hot to do parikrama during the day, so, most people do parikrama in the evening or early morning. Crowds can be seen moving along the Parikrama Marg throughout the night. Even without vehicles, the roads are packed, so, traffic restrictions are being kept in place 24 hours a day for this entire month.
