Braj, 2018.05.10 (VT): Today, two days after a wild storm that knocked down almost 600 electricity poles, temperatures are back to 42 C (107 F) in Braj. Most areas have electricity today after the Electricity Department worked hard to restore power on Thursday.
On Wednesday evening, the temperature dropped to the low 30’s (below 100), giving some relief from the blazing summer, but, by midday on Thursday, the heatwave (40+C) was back – the rain had cleared the usual dust from the sky and the sun’s rays beat down unobstructed.
The hailstorm only lasted for around five minutes in most areas, but the marble sized pellets caused extensive damage to crops. Last month, a storm destroyed the majority of the wheat crop in several villages, and now, once again, crops have been damaged by wind and hail.
On Thursday, the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Dinesh Sharma, reached Mathura on a one day tour. He presented checks of Rs4 Lakh (US$6000) to families who have lost relatives in the recent storms.
