Vrindavan 2016.09.23 (VT): Traditional Sanjhi Art Festival started at Brahma Kund amid spiritual and cultural programmes. Artists associated with temples and prime families made splendid “Sanjhi” to participate in the festival, which was appreciated by thousands of art lovers who visited yesterday. Sumit Goswami, associated with the Radha Raman temple too has participated with his sanjhi arts.
Sanjhi depicting the pastimes of Radha and Krishna has always fascinated all irrespective of spiritual inclinations. Around half a dozen sanjhi were showcased yesterday at Brahma Kund. Goswami associated with the Shahjahanpur temple displayed his Sanjhi drawings made on the clay altar, depicting the pastimes of Lords. The sanjhi made by Rasik Vallabh Nagarch from flowers attracted all the visitors.
Sanjhis made by villager women using cow dung was appreciated by all for its neatness and traditional touch. Sanjay Soni from Mathura made a Sanjhi of Thakur Bankey Bihari Ji using just flowers, which bound the devotees to hail for Thakur Ji after seeing the magnificent piece of art. Shri Somdatt Shastri sang the “Pada” (classical songs) for the traditional sanjhi culture of Braj.
Braj Cultural Research Institute all exhibited the history of the Sanjhi Art Festivals of Vrindavan; which was narrated by the Chairman Shri Laxmi Narayan Tiwari. Shri Vineet Narain (Chairman of the organising firm The Braj Foundation / TBF) said that the organisation tries to connect the people from their roots via such art festivals. He further said the Sanjhi is a lost art with a magnificent history date back to Dwapar Yuga, and TBF tries to aware the new generation about it.
The event was started by the Shri Narayan Das Agarwal (Chancellor of GLA University) by lighting of lamps.
As per the Vedas, when Lord Krishna used to return with cows after a long day, Shrimati Radha Rani and other Gopis used to prepare Sanjhis on his way using flowers. Since it was prepared during evening, temples depicted the name as “Sanjhi” for the art (evening art).
