Govardhan/New Delhi, 2016.11.03 (VT): Two senior forest officials have been suspended by the National Green Tribunal after they were found guilty of non-compliance with its orders. The NGT suspended the then-officiating Divisional Director of U.P. Social Forestry, Shri Shyam Kishor Shukla and S.D.O, Mr. P.S. Mathuria. A high-level committee of two officials sent by the U.P. Government has also found them guilty.
The NGT had previously directed the forestry department to remove illegal encroachments from the forested area on the Giriraj parikrama path in response to a Public Interest Litigation.
The PIL was filed by Giriraj ji Parikrama Sansthan, in which it said that the forest land on the parikrama path was illegally encroached upon in several places, making the parikrama narrow. Several colonies have been developed on the parikrama path.
It claimed that the Govardhan parikrama has become too narrow in places due to these encroachments. The boundary demarcation signs of the forest land are also being tampered with.
The Govardhan parikrama is encroached upon at 61 places. The high-level committee deputed by the U.P. Government also found irregularities in attempts to remove those encroachments.
The Green Court will hear the case again on 25th November.
